Wildflower Walk—April 2024

Our wildflower walk at Ganargua Creek Meadow Preserve in Macedon, NY on Friday, April 26, 2024, was delightful. The weather was cool but sunny and the woodland was looking fresh from the spring rains. In bloom were both white and red trilliums, spring beauties, blue cohosh, wild geranium, Virginia bluebells, a few trout lily/fawn lily and false Soloman’s seal.

We learned from wildflower virtuosos Dave and Carol Southby about several plants that were new to many of us—aborted (or kidney-leaf) buttercup, false mermaids, the monoecious flowers (separate male and female flowers on the same plant) of Pennsylvania sedge, the growing conditions that favor ramps/wild leeks and the white and pink color variations of spring beauties. It was a fascinating walk and delightful to be out in the woods on a beautiful morning.

Original event announcement

Join us on Friday, April 26 at 10:30 am (until about 12:30 pm) for a walk at a public nature preserve in Macedon, NY.

Late April is a delightful time to enjoy the abundance and rich diversity of wildflowers on this woodland hillside. We will take it at a slow pace to discover beautiful spring wildflowers like toothwort, spring beauty, blue cohosh, trillium, and many more that grow along the trail. Bring your wildflower books and we will spot wildflowers and share information as we go.

This walk takes place on a half-mile, wooded trail that zig-zags gently downhill, returning uphill along the same trail and with occasional benches. Please note that in the event of heavy rain we may have to cancel the walk, for safety’s sake (steep spots can get very slippery) and also to preserve the trail.

Space is strictly limited to 20 people. This event requires membership and pre-registration. To register, either respond to the email you will have received from us (assuming you’re on our email list) or email us at flowercitygardennetwork@gmail.com. Directions will be emailed to registrants before the event.
