A Scottsville Garden—June 2024

If you were lucky enough to get to Susan Buckner’s Scottsville, NY garden on June 11, 2024, wasn’t it wonderful? The word that kept coming up was amazing. So many gorgeous plants, some old favorites and many unusual varieties, looking very lush in an artfully designed, mostly hillside garden with stone paths, a pond, a waterfall…

Susan specializes in many types of plants for both sun and shade, but hostas are a special favorite, and there were many choice cultivars, especially an amazing assortment of minis. Susan generously said that we may visit when we like (she has a wide assortment of hostas for sale) as long as we call ahead: Hostas N’ More, hostas and perennials, 266 Stottle Rd, Scottsville, 14546, (585) 889-7678, sebuckner@frontiernet.net.

Original event announcement

Join FCGN on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for a visit to Susan Buckner’s garden in Scottsville, NY.

Here is how Susan describes her garden:

“When I bought my house in 2018, the property was 3.5 acres of grass with one shed and a ranch house, so all I could do was imagine what it could look like. By the time we moved in one year later, I had added the butterfly koi pond, creek, patio and sidewalk out back. When I sold the house in Caledonia, I stipulated that I got two years to dig out all of my plants. Luckily they gave me three years, as they are not gardeners. Needless to say, I lined the trees and the sidewalk—plus plus plus!—with an assortment of perennials, hosta, peonies, rarer shade plants, and more. ‘I’m just a girl who can’t say no’ to a plant. I also added many new trees and conifers, both in the gardens and in the ‘back 40,’ a sort of mini arboretum. I start with small trees so hope I live another 20 years to see them grow. It is still a work in progress, as all gardens are.”
