A Hydrangea Expert’s Collection in Bloomfield—July 2024

Those of us who got to visit Tim Boebel’s garden in Bloomfield, NY on July 25th & 30th, were privileged to take in a sight seldom seen – a yard just full of so many beautiful plants in bloom. And what could be prettier than a garden of billowing shrubs in pink, blue and purple (H. macrophylla and serrata), along with the white of H. paniculatas and arborescens? Tim grows a large number of different cultivars and several species of Hydrangea, some quite rare, and he is an expert on hydrangeas and other ornamentals. In addition to seeing his lovely landscape, we learned a great deal about hydrangeas, and also about other shrubs and perennials – chaste tree, crepe myrtle, seven sons, rose of Sharon and more. This turned out to be a prime year for the less-than-hardy blooms. Let’s hope we can go back in future years for more of these entrancing flowers.

Original event announcement

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, at 6:30, FCGN members have an opportunity for a guided tour of Tim Boebel’s hydrangea collection in Bloomfield.

A hydrangea expert, Tim is nursery manager at Wayside Garden Center in Macedon. He says that this is an ideal year to visit because there are more flower buds on the bushes than he has ever seen in his wide collection of hydrangeas of several species. Based on many years of experience, Tim has made many changes to the collection, getting rid of under-performers and adding many new promising varieties, as well as updating his other plantings. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about one of our favorite (and frustrating) flowering shrubs and to see the merits of many beautiful blooming varieties in a lovely garden setting.
